Olivia Lunny

Some songs give you a glimpse into an artist’s world; others leave you wondering what they’ll do next. With “breakfast” Olivia Lunny does a little of both. Having already been featured in Saturne Magazine twice, Olivia is no stranger to us, yet she always seems to have a new side to share. As her sound continues to evolve, her latest single offers another glimpse into where she’s headed. We caught up with Olivia to talk about “breakfast” the EP on the horizon, and the creative direction she’s exploring next.

Your new single, “breakfast,” is out today. Congratulations! Can you tell us more about the story behind the song and what inspired you to write it?

Thank you!! Breakfast is all about having fun, flirting, and not taking things too seriously. I wanted to make something cheeky and confident. It’s such a fun introduction to this new era!

“breakfast” serves as a first taste of your upcoming EP, which is set to arrive next spring. What can you tell us about this new project? Is there a particular direction or atmosphere you’re exploring?

I’d say a balance of playful pop, femininity, mixed with nostalgia and depth. I’ve had so much fun bringing it to life.

We first discovered your music through darker, yet still upbeat sounds, whereas “Breakfast” feels a little more cheeky and playful. Does this shift reflect your current state of mind, or did you simply want to explore a different side of yourself musically?

Definitely a bit of both! I’m in a really fun chapter of life, and I think the music reflects that. That being said,I will always love and naturally include the darker/deeper songs too.

In our previous interview, you told us that with your album VELVET & DENIM, you wanted to explore themes of growth and the duality of life. What themes or emotions are you hoping to explore with your upcoming EP?

A little bit of everything! Love, confidence, desire, vulnerability, and all the messy in between moments. There’s definitely a playful side to the project, but also some darker, moodier vibes. Duality will always be a constant theme for me in my music :)

Has your approach to songwriting changed since VELVET & DENIM? Do you find yourself writing about different things now, or has your perspective on certain subjects evolved?

I’ve learned to trust my instincts a little more. I still love writing from the heart, but I’ve been having fun experimenting with different sounds, moods, and sides of my personality. It’s been really freeing.

Having shared the stage with such different artists, is there anything you’ve learned from watching them perform or from being part of their tours that has influenced your own approach to live music?

I think the biggest takeaway is to own your individuality. The most memorable performers in my opinion are always the ones who feel completely themselves!

Looking back at the artist you were when you released VELVET & DENIM, what do you think would surprise that version of yourself the most about where you are today?

Probably how much I’ve learned to fall in love with process! I used to be so focused on the next milestone, and now I’m really appreciating the little moments along the way. There’s something really nice about allowing yourself to be hyper present and enjoy each second of the creative process.

As you enter this new musical chapter, what is something you’re excited to experiment with that you haven’t had the chance to explore yet?

I’ve been doing all of the creative direction and styling for this project. I’m absolutely loving it.. and can’t wait to dive into it more.
